Google sends fewer clicks. Build the list while it still sends some
Search is starting to keep the answer for itself. The visitors it still sends are the cheapest audience you will ever get a chance to keep.
The traffic nobody had to argue for
In the newsrooms I worked in, search was the channel nobody had to defend. Social had moods. Newsletters needed work. Push needed arguments. Search showed up every morning like a utility.
That is changing, and I don't think it changes back. More searches end on the results page now. The answer sits at the top, sometimes written by a model, and the link below it is a footnote. You can still rank first and get fewer visits.
I don't have a number for how much. Nobody honest has one for your site without looking at it. What I can say is that if your Search Console shows impressions holding and clicks sliding, you are not imagining it.
Every search visit is a first visit
Here is what bothers me most about search traffic, and it bothered me long before AI answers. Every visit is a first visit. Someone types a question, lands on you, gets the answer and leaves. Next time they have a question, they ask the search box again. Not you.
Nothing carries over. You did the work, they got the value, and the relationship stays with whoever owns the search box.
The cheap part is the visitor you already have
When search sends fewer people, the instinct is to fight for more search. Better content, more pages, a faster site. Do that. It still misses the cheaper move.
The visitors search still sends are already on your page. You paid nothing extra for them. If even a small share leave with a way back, their next visit doesn't need Google at all.
That is what an owned channel is. Email, if they give you an address. Browser push if they won't, and most won't. One click on allow, and the next visit starts with you.
What I would do this month
I would find the pages that still get search traffic and put a quiet question on them. Not on arrival. After someone read to the end or opened a second page. One sentence about what they get.
I would send less than I want to. A welcome, then only things those readers would actually want. Chrome removes notification permission for sites people ignore, so a list you spam is a list you lose.
And I would measure it against a group that got nothing, so that in six months I have a number I trust instead of a click rate.
You found this through search too
I know. You probably got here from a search engine. I am not against search. I am against one channel deciding how many people you can reach.
Build the list while search still sends you people. I would not bet on it sending more next year.
