Where did my subscribers go?

Most weeks the number went down. CTR looked fine. Nobody in the tool could name the losses.

Minus something, again

I got used to a red week. Open the dashboard on Monday, the subscriber count had dropped, and the only story the product had was a net. Minus a few hundred. Or a thousand. No split. No names for the losses.

CTR for the last send often looked acceptable. That number won the next meeting. The leaking base did not get a slide.

A net is not an explanation

If you only see the week-over-week total, you cannot tell a person who hit unsubscribe from a browser that took permission away, or from an endpoint that just died. Those are different problems. They need different responses. Lumping them together is how you keep sending into a room that is getting smaller.

I looked for a product that would decompose that. I did not find one I could buy.

The losses I keep seeing

Someone turned notifications off. That is the clean signal. They were done with you.

The browser acted. Since last October Chrome can remove notification permission when engagement is very low and volume is high. It tells the person. They can put it back in Safety Check. Installed web apps are not in that feature. That is Google's page from 10 October 2025, not a guess about internals.

The endpoint is gone. 404 or 410 from the push service. If you do not clean those, you keep counting ghosts.

Keys changed. A new VAPID pair or a subscription replace is not a human leaving. It still leaves a hole if you do not reconnect.

Repeated delivery failure is the operational bucket. After a while you should stop paying attention to a dead address.

Why this got louder

Before late 2025 I could tell myself most of the drop was opt-outs and dead endpoints. After Chrome started auto-revoking, and after the January rate limits, a quiet list can mean the browser is protecting the person from you. If you only watch unsubscribe clicks you will miss that.

I am not going to pretend EngageNudge already has a perfect forensics view for every row. The product work is to name the buckets. Until that is honest, I will not sell you a dashboard I have not shipped.

If your current tool cannot even say which of those losses you are looking at, you are flying the channel blind. That is the part I could not stand.
